Germany potato prices rise amid significant harvest decline

Potato prices in Germany rose by 11.3 percent in September 2026 compared to the previous year, significantly outpacing the general inflation rate of 3.3 percent. This price surge is driven by a substantial drop in the domestic harvest, which is estimated to reach only 10.4 million tons—a nearly 25 percent decrease from the 13.9 million tons harvested in 2025.

The decline is attributed to extreme summer heat, drought conditions, and an 11.1 percent reduction in cultivated land. These factors resulted in lower yields per hectare, dropping from 46 tons in 2025 to an expected 38.9 tons in 2026. Consequently, producer prices for table potatoes surged by 61.5 percent in August.

While fresh potato prices have climbed, the trend is different for processed products. Prices for frozen potato products, such as french fries, fell by 4.7 percent compared to the previous year. Despite the harvest shortage, Germany remains a net exporter of potatoes, with a self-sufficiency rate of approximately 145 percent reported for the 2024/25 economic year.
