Germany poultry consumption rises as domestic production lags
An analysis by the Central Association of the German Poultry Industry (ZDG) and Roland Berger indicates that poultry consumption in Germany is rising, with chicken meat driving the trend. While 90 percent of poultry consumed in Germany in 2025 was produced domestically, this share is expected to decline in the coming years.
Between 2010 and 2025, poultry consumption in Germany increased by 30 percent to nearly 1.9 million tons per year. Specifically, chicken consumption rose by 65 percent, whereas turkey consumption fell by nearly a quarter. The ZDG projects an annual growth rate of 3.4 percent in consumption through 2040, representing a 50 percent increase in market volume.
Although domestic production capacity has grown by nearly 10 percent since 2010, it is expanding much slower than demand. Currently, domestic production covers only 91 percent of German consumption. The ZDG attributes this slow growth to restrictive domestic conditions, including lengthy permit processes for new poultry houses and increasing environmental and animal welfare requirements.
