Germany: Prefabricated house permits see market share increase

The market share of prefabricated houses in Germany is increasing. According to data from the Federal Statistical Office and the Bundesverband Deutscher Fertigbau, prefabricated homes accounted for 26.7 percent of all newly approved single and two-family houses in the first half of the year, up from 26.2 percent in the same period last year.

During this period, 7,432 prefabricated house permits were issued out of a total of 27,838 new home permits. The prefabricated construction sector saw a growth of 16.9 percent, which exceeded the overall growth rate of 14.5 percent for all building permits.

Regional trends show that prefabricated construction is particularly popular in southwestern Germany. Baden-Württemberg recorded the highest share of permits at 44.7 percent, followed by Hessen at 33 percent and Rheinland-Pfalz at nearly 28 percent. In terms of absolute numbers, Bavaria led with 2,020 newly approved prefabricated houses. Achim Hannott, managing director of the association, noted that the increasing competitiveness of prefabricated construction is evident even in major metropolitan markets such as Berlin, Cologne, Hannover, and Augsburg.
