Germany prepares for 2027 Federal Convention on Political Education

The Federal Convention on Political Education (Bundeskongress politische Bildung) is scheduled to take place in Augsburg, Germany, from June 24 to June 26, 2027. Organized by the Federal Agency for Civic Education (bpb) in cooperation with the Federal Committee for Political Education and the German Association for Political Education, the event will focus on the theme ‘Taking Responsibility – Shaping Democracy: Political Education for an Action-Oriented Society.’

In a related context regarding democratic education, the Association of Education and Training (VBE) has emphasized the need to protect pedagogical freedom. Following findings from the Robert Bosch Foundation, educators have expressed concerns regarding political neutrality and increasing pressure from political extremes. The VBE advocates for the Beutelsbach Consensus, asserting that while controversial topics must be presented controversially without overwhelming students, teachers have a duty to defend the liberal-democratic basic order and address challenges to human rights.
