Germany prepares for Beethoven anniversary and climate protests

Germany is preparing for various cultural and social events in late 2026 and 2027. In anticipation of the 200th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven’s death in March 2027, several institutions have announced commemorative programs. The Festspielhaus Baden-Baden will host a 2027 season featuring major operas, galas with stars such as Asmik Grigorian and Anna Netrebko, and a new production of ‘Fidelio’ directed by Krzysztof Warlikowski. Additionally, the Kunstmuseum Solingen will launch its new concert season on October 25, 2026, with a Beethoven-themed performance by pianist Joseph Moog.

Separately, in Baden-Baden, climate activists from Extinction Rebellion have announced protests coinciding with the annual Reinsurance Meeting. The group accuses the reinsurance industry of hindering the energy transition by continuing to insure fossil fuel projects. Activists plan to use creative demonstrations, including the symbolic burning of an earth globe, to highlight the industry’s perceived role in the escalating climate crisis.
