Germany prepares for major crane migration as climate shifts behavior

Large numbers of cranes are beginning to gather at major resting sites in northeastern Germany ahead of their autumn migration. Expert Günter Nowald reports that Germany hosts more than 13,000 breeding pairs and expects between 200,000 and 300,000 cranes to rest in the country simultaneously by October. In total, over 400,000 cranes are expected to fly over Germany.

Key resting areas include the Bodden landscapes near Darß, Stralsund, and Rügen, as well as the Rhin-Havelluch region north of Berlin. While many cranes traditionally migrate to the Iberian Peninsula or France, climate change is altering their behavior. Due to milder winters and a lack of snow cover, which allows birds to feed on crop remains, an increasing number of cranes are choosing to overwinter in Germany.

This shift is reflected in migration distances; the average distance for ringed cranes has dropped from 1,700 kilometers twenty-five years ago to just 500 kilometers today.
