Germany prepares for pension reform and new ETF-based retirement depots
Germany is preparing for significant shifts in private pension planning, highlighted by the upcoming Anlegertag Berlin on October 10, 2026. Formerly known as Börsentag Berlin, the event will focus on modern wealth accumulation, including ETFs, cryptocurrencies, and new pension solutions.
A central development is the introduction of the 'Altersvorsorgedepot' (pension depot) starting January 1, 2027. This reform allows for tax-advantaged private pension solutions based on capital market investments without contribution guarantees, enabling investors to rely more heavily on funds and ETFs.
Financial experts, including Michael Krogmann of Deutsche Börse and Thomas Soltau of Smartbroker, have noted that these reforms and the growing demand for low-cost ETF savings plans could significantly strengthen the stock market culture in Germany. Discussions also highlight the role of gold-based products, such as Xetra-Gold, as potential portfolio additions within these evolving retirement frameworks.
