Germany prepares medical system for potential large-scale conflict

Germany is assessing its medical readiness for potential large-scale armed conflict on NATO's eastern flank. The Bundeswehr estimates that in a worst-case scenario, the country could receive between 300 and 1,000 wounded soldiers daily, with approximately one-third requiring intensive care.

Because the five existing military hospitals lack sufficient capacity, plans involve integrating civilian healthcare facilities into the casualty management system. Preparations include increasing stockpiles of medicines and surgical supplies, installing drone-resistant barriers and reinforced glass, and training civilian surgeons for mass casualty events.

Authorities are also considering the reactivation of Cold War-era infrastructure, such as an underground medical bunker in Ulm designed to house 2,000 people for 90 days. However, officials warn of significant challenges, including a shortage of medical personnel experienced in war injuries and the need to modernize ventilation and power systems in older facilities.
