Germany prioritizes generational change in agriculture
The German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture is prioritizing generational change within the agricultural sector to ensure the future of farming. During a meeting with youth agricultural associations, Minister Alois Rainer emphasized the need to support young successors in taking over farms and establishing livelihoods.
Statistics indicate a significant challenge: in Germany, approximately 40 percent of farm managers are over the age of 55, and for 63 percent of them, succession remains unresolved. Across the EU, the average age of farm managers is 57. The Ministry is developing a strategy to address these issues, with a specific focus on the needs of women in agriculture.
On a regional level, young women in Bavaria are actively working to overcome gender stereotypes in the industry. Recent graduates, including Franziska Aumer, Magdalena Fink, and Phoebe Chasiotis, represent a new wave of female farmers pursuing professional training and managing diverse agricultural roles, from herd management to digital integration.
