Germany: Procedures and insurance steps after a death
Following a death, survivors in Germany must navigate several legal and administrative steps. Legally, a doctor must certify the death and issue a death certificate, which serves as the basis for all subsequent formalities. If a death occurs at home, a medical examination is required; in cases of sudden or unexplained death, the police may also be involved.
Regarding insurance, heirs must promptly notify providers to avoid financial losses. Individual private liability insurance policies typically end upon the death of the insured, with pro-rata refunds for already paid premiums. In contrast, family insurance policies remain active until the next premium is due, at which point a surviving member can take over the contract. Certain object-related policies, such as pet owner or property owner liability insurance, do not necessarily terminate and may be transferred to the heirs.
