Germany promotes biodiversity through art and urban nature projects

Various ecological restoration and urban nature projects are being highlighted in Germany to promote biodiversity and climate resilience.

In the Nesse valley, the Deutsche Umwelthilfe is working on the ‘Auenland’ project to maintain the improved state of the Nesse river. To communicate the benefits of this renaturation to the public, an art residency was organized. Under the direction of Cosmo Schüppel and Katharina Meier, ten artists spent six weeks working near the Hofkäserei Haina to engage with the river's habitat through photography, performances, and temporary installations. The results will be featured in a publication scheduled for 2027.

In Berlin and Brandenburg, Bettina Hagedorn, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for the Environment, awarded winners of the 2025 UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration project competition. Key projects include the Deutsche Wildtierstiftung’s initiative to create wildflower areas for wild bees across Berlin’s districts, and the ‘Blühender Campus’ project at FU Berlin, which focuses on increasing biodiversity within university grounds to improve the urban climate.
