Germany promotes electronic waste recycling in Hanau and Viersen

German municipalities are promoting electronic waste recycling initiatives to recover valuable raw materials such as copper, aluminum, lithium, and cobalt.

In Hanau, Mayor Isabelle Hemsley has called on residents to properly dispose of old electronics, emphasizing that items should be repaired via local resources like the Repair Café Hanau before being sent to the recycling center at Benzstraße. The city aims to keep these precious materials within the circular economy to protect the environment.

In Viersen, the city is participating in a mobile phone collection campaign organized by the Pontifical Mission Societies (missio). A collection box is located at the Viersen City Hall. The collected devices are processed within Germany to prevent export; they are either refurbished for resale, reused for components, or professionally recycled. Proceeds from these efforts support global humanitarian projects, including initiatives against modern slavery and child protection centers near e-waste sites.
