Germany proposes data center energy delays amid 6 trillion euro climate goal costs
The German government has proposed delaying the requirement for data centers to balance their electricity consumption with renewable sources from January 1, 2027, to January 1, 2030. The proposal also includes plans to relax certain energy efficiency requirements, such as increasing Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) limits.
Separately, a study by the KfW Institute indicates that Germany will require approximately 6 trillion euros in investments between 2025 and 2045 to achieve climate neutrality. This represents an annual investment need of roughly 290 billion euros, a significant increase from the average of 110 billion euros spent annually between 2018 and 2023. The majority of these costs are expected to be borne by companies and households, with the transport sector accounting for 45 percent of the total required investment.
