Germany proposes electric privileges for microcars

The German government has submitted a proposed amendment to the Electric Mobility Act (EmoG) to the Bundestag, aiming to expand benefits for small electric microcars. The amendment seeks to grant municipal privileges, such as parking advantages and exemptions from certain access restrictions, to electric light vehicles in the L6e category.

To qualify, vehicles must be purely battery-electric, have a maximum speed of 45 km/h, a maximum of two seats, and a weight of no more than 425 kg. Examples of such vehicles include the Opel Rocks, Citroën Ami, and Fiat Topolino. These microcars can be operated by drivers as young as 15 with an AM class license and do not require standard registration, using an insurance mark instead. To facilitate the use of electric privileges, the draft law proposes a plaque system that identifies these vehicles using their insurance mark.
