Germany proposes harsher penalties for use of date rape drugs
German Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig is advocating for increased penalties to deter the use of date rape drugs. Under a new proposal from the German federal government, individuals who use such substances to facilitate rape or robbery could face a minimum sentence of five years in prison.
The reform seeks to legally reclassify these substances as weapons or dangerous tools. This legislative move follows a 2024 ruling by the Federal Court of Justice, which had determined that date rape drugs did not qualify as 'dangerous tools' under existing criminal statutes.
Minister Hubig emphasized that while higher sentences serve as a deterrent, the government also requires improved prevention and public education. The proposed changes are part of a broader federal strategy to enhance protection against violence.
