Germany plans plastic packaging tax amid new bio-based material developments
Germany is moving toward implementing a new tax on plastic packaging, proposed at 550 euros per ton, set to take effect in July 2027. The measure aims to generate approximately 1.5 billion euros annually and incentivize the use of recycled materials. However, the plan has faced criticism from industry associations regarding potential increases in material costs, administrative burdens, and the method of bypassing deep ministerial consultation by introducing it as an amendment to the budget law.
In parallel, scientific advancements are targeting plastic reduction. Researchers at Fraunhofer ICT and the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon have developed bio-based alternatives to polystyrene (EPS). The new material, branded as ‘biosphear’ by the startup Nexofoam, is derived from plant-based raw materials and can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 80 percent compared to traditional fossil-based Styrofoam. This new material is designed to be compatible with existing industrial processing equipment.
Additionally, the European Climate Pact is supporting the ‘Zero Plastic Campaign,’ an initiative led by ambassadors to raise awareness about microplastics and hidden plastics in everyday products through social media and scientific outreach.
