Germany proposes simplified mediation for airline passenger complaints

The German Judges Association has expressed support for new plans introduced by Federal Minister of Justice Stefanie Hubig to simplify mediation processes for airline passenger complaints. The proposed changes aim to allow travelers to resolve compensation claims for delayed or cancelled flights more efficiently through out-of-court settlements.

Under the current system, the Federal Office of Justice (BfJ) is required to draft a mediation proposal in every case, even if an airline fails to respond. The new draft ordinance would grant the mediation office the discretion to waive such proposals, potentially saving time for cases where a settlement is more likely.

Sven Rebehn, Federal Managing Director of the German Judges Association, noted that the reform could alleviate pressure on local courts, which are expected to handle over 100,000 passenger compensation lawsuits against airlines this year.
