Germany protests erupt after AfD victory in Saxony-Anhalt

Thousands of people across Germany have taken to the streets to protest the significant electoral victory of the right-wing populist Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in the Saxony-Anhalt state elections. The AfD secured 43.8 percent of the vote, winning 39 of the 83 seats in the state parliament, amid a record voter turnout of 77.8 percent.

In Berlin, police estimated approximately 5,000 protesters gathered near the Brandenburg Gate, while organizers from the group Campact estimated the crowd reached 14,000. Demonstrations also occurred in Essen, Frankfurt, Rostock, and other regions. Protesters carried signs against fascism and racism, calling for the party to be banned.

German political leaders reacted to the results, with CDU leader Friedrich Merz expressing shock at the outcome. Meanwhile, the German domestic intelligence service has previously classified the AfD branch in Saxony-Anhalt as a group of 'confirmed right-wing extremists'. The election results come ahead of upcoming regional elections in Berlin and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
