Germany: Mass protests demand legal ban of AfD party

Thousands of people across several German cities, including Berlin, Munich, Dresden, Bremen, and Magdeburg, participated in demonstrations calling for a legal process to ban the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. Protesters are demanding that authorities examine whether the party meets the constitutional criteria for a ban, citing its classification by some services as proven far-right.

The movement follows the election of AfD politician Tobias Rauß to the presidency of the Saxony-Anhalt parliament. Amidst these tensions, migration expert Gerald Knaus suggested that a ban initiative could potentially pass the Bundesrat with a simple majority, noting that only three votes are currently missing for such a move.

Simultaneously, localized protests have emerged in response to specific AfD activities. In Cologne, an information stand in the city center triggered spontaneous counter-demonstrations. In Neumünster, a broad civil society alliance is organizing a counter-protest against an announced AfD march, citing concerns over rising right-wing influence and past incidents of political violence.
