Algeria-Jordan World Cup 2026 Match Sparks Violence and Fatal Crowd Incident

Following Algeria’s 2-1 victory over Jordan in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, violent clashes erupted among supporters in Doha, Qatar. The brawl, captured on video at a restaurant in the Al Dafna district, saw participants using chairs and tables as weapons. Qatari police arrested 25 individuals of Arab nationality and launched investigations into the disturbance, citing threats to public safety and order.

In Amman, Jordan, a separate crowd surge during a public viewing of the same match turned deadly. Nine people were taken to hospitals after a panic and stampede on the historic Roman Amphitheatre and nearby Hachemite Square, with one supporter confirmed dead. Jordanian authorities opened an inquiry into the circumstances of the fatality.

The match also drew diplomatic attention as Jordan’s King Abdullah II and Crown Prince Hussein publicly applauded the team despite the loss, highlighting royal support for the squad’s effort. The combined incidents underscore heightened tensions surrounding the World Cup qualifier and raise concerns over crowd management for future international fixtures.
