Germany provides 87.2 million euros for Madagascar biodiversity

Germany has provided 87.2 million euros to the Foundation for Protected Areas and Biodiversity of Madagascar (FAPBM). This funding is intended to ensure the long-term financing of 75 protected areas, 43 of which are managed by Madagascar National Parks.

Through the German cooperation agency GIZ, various environmental and developmental initiatives have been implemented since 2019. These include the restoration of 95,000 hectares of land and the sustainable management of 200,000 hectares of forest. Additionally, support has been provided to 250,000 farmers and 15,000 small-scale foresters to increase household incomes.

In the energy sector, 2 MW of renewable energy have been installed for 7,500 users, with commitments to generate an additional 13 MW through hydroelectric plants and solar mini-grids. Infrastructure projects have also included the construction or rehabilitation of 147 km of rural tracks and various school and administrative buildings. In agriculture, 45,000 producers have received training in climate-resilient cultivation methods.
