Germany provides housing support and mobility training for seniors

In Germany, social welfare offices are obligated to provide support for elderly individuals seeking housing that meets their physical needs, even if those individuals do not qualify for basic income security (Grundsicherung). Under § 71 SGB XII, authorities are required to offer counseling and assistance to help seniors maintain independence and social participation, regardless of their income or assets. While this does not guarantee a specific apartment or immediate lease, it mandates assistance in finding suitable living arrangements.

Complementing these social services, local initiatives are focusing on practical mobility. In Hanau, the Hanauer Straßenbahn GmbH (HSB) and the Senior Citizens' Office are organizing training sessions to help people using walkers (rollators) navigate public transportation safely. Similarly, the Verkehrsverbund Bremen/Niedersachsen (VBN) has announced mobility training to assist passengers with limited mobility in using buses, digital ticketing, and transit apps.
