Germany public backs fuel‑price aid for low‑income commuters and extension of tank discount

A Forsa poll conducted on 13‑14 July with 1,001 respondents found that 64 % of Germans support targeted state assistance for low‑income workers who have to commute long distances, with the highest backing among SPD (78 %) and The Left (86 %) supporters. The same survey showed that 56 % favour extending the existing fuel‑tax rebate of roughly 17 cents per litre for gasoline and diesel, while 37 % oppose it.

Respondents also expect fuel prices to remain high: 60 % think gasoline and diesel prices will stay at current levels, 23 % anticipate further rises, and only 11 % foresee notable price cuts. The poll was commissioned by RTL and ntv and reflects ongoing public debate over how to mitigate the impact of high fuel costs on households and the environment.
