Germany pushes EU to extend tariffs to Chinese PHEVs

Germany's ruling Social Democratic Party (SPD) is pressuring the European Union to expand tariffs on Chinese vehicles to include plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). While the EU has already implemented countervailing duties on battery electric vehicles (BEVs) to combat unfair subsidies, PHEVs currently remain exempt from these specific measures.

The SPD argues that Chinese manufacturers are exploiting this loophole to maintain competitiveness through unfair practices. This push comes as the German automotive sector faces significant pressure; major manufacturers like Volkswagen are undergoing massive restructuring, including potential workforce reductions of up to 100,000 employees, due to intense competition and declining sales in the Chinese market.

In addition to PHEV tariffs, German policymakers are discussing broader trade defense mechanisms. These include requirements for Chinese firms to establish joint ventures when entering the European market, monitoring currency manipulation, and implementing measures to ensure a certain percentage of local content in products to protect European manufacturing and labor.
