German Railway GSM‑R Failure Halts Nationwide Train Service
A technical fault during a component swap disabled the GSM‑R digital train‑control system used by Deutsche Bahn, preventing communication between train drivers and control centers. The failure triggered a nationwide shutdown of passenger, regional, S‑Bahn and freight services on Tuesday night, leaving thousands of travellers stranded and causing significant delays that persisted into the following day.
The backup system (P/GSM) could not be activated in time, and trains only began to run again after about two hours, with full normalisation taking until early Wednesday. Deutsche Bahn reported the incident to the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) as required for critical infrastructure. Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder demanded a thorough investigation, while the private freight rail association and other industry groups called for tighter state oversight and the creation of a dedicated federal rail‑infrastructure agency.
Experts highlighted the aging GSM‑R system—over 20 years old—and warned that its vulnerability necessitates a faster transition to the Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS) or a 5G‑based solution. The outage has sparked debate over investment, redundancy, and the need for modernised safety and communication standards across Germany's rail network.
