German rail arson halts Hamburg‑Cuxhaven services
Police suspect arson after a distribution box burned near Neu Wulmstorf, damaging signalling equipment on the Hamburg‑Cuxhaven line. The fire forced the suspension of S‑Bahn line S5 and regional RE5 services, cancelling more than 200 scheduled trips and prompting bus and taxi replacement services for thousands of passengers.
A similar blaze damaged cable ducts on the main Düsseldorf‑Cologne route in North‑Rhine Westphalia, also attributed to sabotage. Deutsche Bahn reported a rise in railway‑related crime: 2,200 sabotage, arson and theft incidents in the first half of 2026, a 7 % increase that has already caused over 220,000 minutes of train delays and affected freight corridors.
Additional disruptions arose from a signalling‑box failure at Uelzen station, further restricting regional services on the Hamburg‑Hanover‑Bremen routes. Authorities are collecting evidence, securing the scenes and seeking witnesses. Investigations continue to determine whether the incidents are isolated acts or part of a coordinated campaign.
