Germany railway stations evacuated following false alarm
A false evacuation alarm triggered the emergency exit of passengers at approximately 1,000 railway stations and stops across three German states on Friday afternoon. The incident affected the central railway region, including Hessen, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Saarland, impacting major hubs such as Frankfurt, Mainz, Saarbrücken, Wiesbaden, and Ludwigshafen.
At approximately 14:55, automated announcements instructed passengers to leave stations through the nearest exits. The alarm was canceled five minutes later once it was determined there was no actual danger. While the disruption was brief, it caused significant confusion for tens of thousands of travelers.
Conflicting reports emerged regarding the cause of the error. Federal police attributed the incident to human error, stating a button was accidentally pressed. However, Deutsche Bahn initially suggested a technical malfunction within the automated system. The railway company later clarified that the warnings were triggered while staff members were updating the passenger information system at the information center. Deutsche Bahn has issued an apology to passengers for the inconvenience.
