Germany raises military threat level due to Russian sabotage risks

The German armed forces (Bundeswehr) have raised their internal threat assessment regarding Russian sabotage to “significant” for the first time. This classification represents the second-highest level on the military’s four-tier scale.

The reassessment follows several security incidents, most notably the mid-September discovery of a crashed drone carrying high explosives near the Wunstorf air base in Lower Saxony. Investigators believe the drone, which may have been positioned near the base for approximately two years, was likely intended to target Bundeswehr aircraft. This differs from an August incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport involving an explosive-laden drone that targeted civilian cargo aircraft used by Ukraine.

An internal military document suggests that Russia has crossed a “previously anticipated red line” by utilizing weaponized drones with the intent to cause kinetic or lethal effects against Germany and its military. The report also highlights a pattern of suspected Russian reconnaissance, including drone overflights of the Arrow 3 missile defense site in Saxony-Anhalt and the discovery of a camouflaged camera filming a strategic railway station in Minden.

A spokesperson for the German Ministry of Defense confirmed the assessment, stating that the Bundeswehr faces a significant sabotage threat overall. In response, security measures are being tailored to specific locations, including increased patrols and enhanced technical protections.
