Germany ranks 69th in global energy security index

A study by the British Adam Smith Institute has ranked Germany 69th out of 187 countries in the Global Energy Security Index 2026. The findings indicate that Germany's energy security lags behind nations such as Iraq, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Kyrgyzstan.

Germany received a total score of 72.4 out of 100 points. The report highlights a significant weakness in controllable power generation, where Germany ranked 180th out of 187. This low ranking is attributed to the increasing reliance on weather-dependent renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar, alongside the decommissioning of conventional power plants, including the shutdown of the last nuclear plants in 2023.

The index evaluates four key areas: controllable power generation, energy source diversity, import security, and economic affordability. The study suggests that the transition toward renewables without sufficient backup capacity or grid expansion poses structural challenges for industrial stability and long-term supply security.
