Germany receives first F-35A fighter in Texas ceremony
Lockheed Martin held a ceremony in Fort Worth, Texas, on September 18, 2026, to present the first F-35A Lightning II aircraft destined for Germany. This delivery marks the beginning of the German Luftwaffe's transition to fifth-generation fighter technology, intended to replace the aging Tornado fleet, which is scheduled for retirement by 2030.
The German acquisition program includes a total of 35 F-35A aircraft. The first eight jets will be stationed at the Ebbing Air National Guard Base in Arkansas to facilitate training for pilots and maintenance personnel. Following this training phase, the aircraft are expected to arrive in Germany starting in the third quarter of 2027, with full operational capability targeted for 2029.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius emphasized that the aircraft provides advanced capabilities, including low observability, integrated sensors, and rapid data fusion. The F-35A will be utilized for strike missions and will support Germany's participation in NATO's nuclear sharing arrangements. The new fleet will be integrated with existing Eurofighter assets and common NATO training and sustainment structures.
