Germany receives first F-35A fighter jet from Lockheed Martin
Germany has received its first F-35A Lightning II combat aircraft from Lockheed Martin in Fort Worth, Texas. This delivery marks a significant upgrade for the Luftwaffe, providing advanced stealth, sensor technology, and electronic warfare capabilities. The aircraft is intended to bolster Germany’s defense capabilities and support NATO’s nuclear deterrence.
As part of a broader $8.4 billion acquisition, Germany is expected to receive 35 fifth-generation fighter jets. The first eight aircraft are scheduled to be at Ebbing Air National Guard Base in Fort Smith for pilot training by April 2027. German pilots are slated to begin training at the base in December, with a training program expected to last five years.
The F-35 deal is part of a larger US-German procurement package worth over $30 billion, which includes Patriot systems, P-8A Poseidon, and CH-47F Chinook helicopters. While the acquisition strengthens transatlantic cooperation and NATO interoperability, it also highlights ongoing discussions regarding European strategic autonomy and reliance on United States supply networks.
