Germany records fewer tornadoes in 2026 due to weather patterns

Germany experienced a significant decrease in tornado activity in 2026. According to the German Weather Service (DWD), only 31 tornadoes were confirmed through the end of September, falling well below the annual average of 49.

DWD tornado expert Marcus Beyer attributed the decline to a lack of necessary weather conditions, such as the specific combination of warm, moist surface air, cold upper-level air, and wind shear. Beyer also noted that years with low tornado counts often coincide with periods of pronounced drought.

Geographically, Lower Saxony recorded the most tornadoes with nine, followed by Hesse with eight. A notable spike occurred on August 19, when 17 of the year's 31 tornadoes were recorded in a single day. Other recorded incidents included waterspouts near Borkum on June 3 and at Lake Constance on July 1.
