Germany: Red stickers on vehicles signal potential 100,000 euro fines
In Germany, vehicle owners who find a red circular sticker, known as the ‘Roter Punkt’, on their windshield must act immediately to avoid severe penalties. This sticker serves as an official notice to remove a vehicle from public spaces within a specified timeframe.
German law prohibits parking unregistered vehicles or those not in roadworthy condition on public roads, parking lots, or sidewalks. If the deadline on the sticker is ignored, authorities may impound, auction, or scrap the vehicle. Owners are responsible for accumulating costs, including administrative fees, unauthorized use fees, towing charges, and storage fees.
In extreme cases, such as when an unregistered or damaged vehicle is classified as hazardous waste due to leaking fluids, fines can reach up to 100,000 euros. If a vehicle is auctioned and the proceeds do not cover the total costs of the procedure, the owner remains liable for the remaining balance. These regulations apply to cars, trucks, motorcycles, scooters, and even abandoned bicycles.
