Germany reduces international humanitarian aid budget by over 50 percent
The German government has significantly reduced its international humanitarian aid budget. According to a response to a parliamentary inquiry by the AfD faction, spending on foreign humanitarian assistance dropped from 2.26 billion euros in 2024 to 1.05 billion euros in 2025, representing a decrease of approximately 54 percent.
While humanitarian aid budgets have declined, the government has allocated 6.4 billion euros toward measures aimed at addressing the root causes of migration. Additionally, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) has seen a reduction in federal funding for its development projects.
