Germany Rejects Russian Allegations of Secret Nuclear Weapons Program

German officials dismissed Russian claims that Berlin is secretly developing nuclear weapons, describing the accusations as part of a Moscow disinformation campaign. Deputy government spokesperson Steffen Mayer told a press conference in Berlin that the reports were spread through channels linked to Russian intelligence to create division within NATO and the EU, undermine Germany's support for Ukraine, and stoke fears of a new nuclear arms race ahead of national elections. He reiterated that Germany has no intention to develop its own nuclear arsenal, and that the allegations lack any factual basis.

The Russian foreign intelligence service (SVR) had previously alleged that German research institutions and defence firms were advancing nuclear and related technologies, but provided no evidence. German authorities said the claims are unfounded and aim to erode confidence in Germany’s security policies.
