Germany rejects Trump's call to withdraw from International Criminal Court

Germany has rejected calls from U.S. President Donald Trump for member states to withdraw from the International Criminal Court (ICC). German Foreign Minister Johann Wadeful described the court as a ‘important institution’ and a vital part of the rules-based international order.

Speaking following Trump’s address to the UN General Assembly, where the U.S. President urged immediate withdrawal and labeled the institution ‘out of control,’ Wadeful noted that the stance represents a significant policy divergence between Germany and the Trump administration. He emphasized that the court embodies the principles of the separation of powers and the rule of law.

The ICC, based in The Hague, investigates the most serious international crimes, including genocide and war crimes. The court is currently facing pressure from Washington, particularly following arrest warrants related to the conflict in Gaza. While the ICC has 125 member states, the United States, Israel, and Russia do not recognize its jurisdiction.
