Germany repatriates Syrian security threat for 6,000 euros

A Syrian national classified by German police as a security threat has voluntarily returned to Syria after receiving a payment of 6,000 euros. The State Office for Asylum and Repatriation (LfAR) confirmed that the 38-year-old man was collected by police and transported to Munich Airport for his departure.

The individual had previously been sentenced to over five years in prison in 2018 for recruiting supporters for the Islamic State (IS). Following his release in early 2022, he was subject to supervision and required to wear an electronic ankle monitor.

The LfAR stated that the repatriation represents a “significant security gain for Germany” and is more economically efficient than the costs associated with continued monitoring and housing. The man has been issued a 20-year entry and residence ban for Germany, and his refusal of entry has been recorded in the Schengen Information System.
