Germany reports decrease in water-polluting substance spills

According to data from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), Germany saw a decrease in environmental accidents involving water-polluting substances in 2025. Approximately 5.9 million liters of substances were released into the environment, representing an 8.9 percent decrease from the 6.5 million liters recorded in 2024.

The total number of accidents fell by 5.3 percent to 1,461, marking the lowest level since 2010 and continuing a downward trend observed since 2017. However, approximately 2.4 million liters of the spilled material—roughly 41.1 percent—could not be recovered and remained in the environment, an increase from the 2.0 million liters left in the environment in 2024.
