PISA study reveals declining global educational performance
The 2025 PISA study results reveal a significant decline in educational performance across several OECD nations, with notable impacts in Germany, Austria, and Spain. In Germany, students reached historic lows in science, reading, and mathematics, with approximately one-third of adolescents lacking basic competencies in reading and math. A critical finding in Germany is the high correlation between socioeconomic background and academic success, which is significantly stronger than the OECD average.
In Austria, the decline in reading and math skills is particularly evident among students with German as their primary language, though students from migrant backgrounds still face a substantial achievement gap. In Spain, performance in all three core areas fell below the OECD average, with a marked increase in the proportion of students with weak skills since 2015.
OECD Director Andreas Schleicher highlighted the potential risks of using AI chatbots as a shortcut for homework, noting that daily users scored lower in science than infrequent users. He emphasized that AI should be used to enhance critical thinking rather than replace it. Meanwhile, in Germany, the GEW union has criticized proposed federal budget cuts to education, arguing that reducing support for families and schools undermines future stability and democracy.
