Germany reports multiple burglaries as theft rates climb

Two recent break‑ins were reported in Germany. In Vegesack, a suspect entered one apartment through a laundry‑room window, confronted the occupants, searched cupboards and fled without taking anything. He later entered a second home through a bathroom window, threatened a family at dinner, and left with a handbag and wallet after a neighbour chased him and recovered the stolen items.

In the town of Haltern am See near Recklinghausen, an unknown burglar forced a garage door, broke into a house through a side door and stole jewellery and cash before escaping via a terrace door. Police are taking tips on both incidents.

Statistics from the Federal Criminal Police Office show that burglary cases in North Rhine‑Westphalia rose from 23,528 in 2022 to 27,061 in 2023, indicating a broader increase in theft across the region.
