Germany faces surge in business closures and industrial decline

Germany is experiencing a significant surge in business closures, reaching levels not seen in nearly two decades. According to an analysis by the Leibniz Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) and Creditreform, approximately 187,744 companies ceased operations in 2025, marking a nearly 10% increase from the previous year.

The wave of closures is affecting various sectors. The hospitality industry saw roughly 15,000 closures, a 15% increase, while the construction sector reported 24,000 closures, up 12%. The industrial sector also saw a 10% rise in business exits. Notably, the healthcare sector is under pressure, with nearly 11,000 facilities closing in 2025, including approximately 5,500 medical practices. This rate of healthcare facility closures is roughly double the level recorded in 2008.

Beyond immediate closures, German industry faces structural challenges. An ifo Institute survey of 2,100 companies found that 43% report a significantly weakened competitive position outside the European Union. Additionally, the 'Energiewende-Barometer 2026' indicates that 33% of surveyed companies are scaling back investments in core processes, driven in part by high energy costs and global economic pressures.
