Germany reports over 148,000 open arrest warrants

Data from the German Federal Government reveals that approximately 148,000 people were subject to open arrest warrants in Germany as of July 1, 2025. The figures were released in response to a parliamentary inquiry by AfD lawmaker Sebastian Münzenmaier.

Of the individuals sought, 87.9 percent held foreign citizenships or had unknown nationalities. Specifically, the list of those with open warrants includes 16,671 Germans, 16,123 Romanians, 12,721 Poles, 6,869 Georgians, and 6,696 Turks. Only 11.2 percent of the total held exclusively German citizenship, while 1.5 percent were dual citizens.

Political reactions to the data have been divided. Alexander Throm of the Union faction characterized the open warrants as a security risk and emphasized the importance of border controls. Conversely, Green Party spokesperson Marcel Emmerich argued against relying on border controls, calling instead for targeted searches for dangerous offenders and politically motivated criminals. The German Police Union noted that limited personnel capacities remain a factor in enforcement.
