Germany reports record domestic violence cases in 2024

Domestic violence cases in Germany have reached a record high. According to data from the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), more than 170,000 people were victims of partner-related violence in 2024, with approximately 80 percent of those victims being female.

While increasing the availability of shelters, counseling centers, and women's refuges is considered essential, experts argue that current measures focus too heavily on the consequences rather than the causes. There is a growing call for a shift in responsibility toward the perpetrators.

Proposed solutions include increased funding for low-threshold, preventative counseling services and awareness campaigns in schools, sports stadiums, and on social media. The goal is to encourage individuals to recognize their own violent tendencies and seek help before an escalation occurs.
