Germany reports rise in far-right martial arts groups

The German Ministry of the Interior has reported an increase in far-right martial arts groups, with the number rising to approximately 20 from about a dozen in June 2024. This growth has been particularly noticeable throughout 2026.

Authorities identified a professionalization of combat skills among groups known as ‘Active Clubs’. This concept, which originated in the United States, aims to recruit young men into far-right extremist environments through physical fitness and martial arts training. While similar groups exist globally, the German government stated there is currently no evidence of international links between German and foreign ‘Active Clubs’, though such connections cannot be ruled out for the future.

The ministry noted that these groups pose a potential threat of violence, citing regular combat training and social media content used to demonstrate readiness for conflict. While the groups operate with significant secrecy, they actively work to attract young men to extremist ideologies. To date, no direct conflicts with political opponents have been recorded.
