Germany reports rise in serious knife attack injuries
A study by the German Society for Trauma Surgery reveals a 58 percent increase in the number of people suffering serious injuries from knife attacks. The research, published in the Deutsches Ärzteblatt, analyzed data from 633 clinics between 2013 and 2024.
The study focused on patients in life-threatening conditions or those in intensive care, meaning fatalities and minor injuries were not included in the statistics. The findings indicate that victims are predominantly young and male, with 85.6 percent being male. Most injuries occur in the chest and abdominal regions, requiring urgent surgery in 72 percent of cases.
Geographically, the highest rate of these incidents was recorded in western Germany, including states such as Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Saarland. These regions accounted for 37 percent of all recorded cases.
