Germany reports rising import prices and improved consumer confidence

Germany's import prices rose by 6.8% annually in July, driven largely by surging energy costs. The increase in energy import costs reached 26.4% year-on-year, influenced by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Specific spikes were noted in mineral oil products, which rose 47.5%, and crude oil, which increased by 22.3%. Additionally, intermediate goods prices saw a 10.2% annual increase, with copper and non-ferrous metals rising significantly.

In contrast, German consumer confidence showed signs of recovery in September. The consumer confidence index rose by 2.8 points to -26.6, exceeding analyst expectations. This improvement was primarily driven by a strong rise in income expectations, which reached a six-month high. While economic outlook assessments have improved for the fourth consecutive month, consumer appetite for major purchases like automobiles and furniture remains weak due to ongoing concerns regarding inflation and geopolitical crises.
