Germany reports rising respiratory infections and measles warnings

Health authorities in Germany are reporting a significant rise in respiratory infections as the colder season begins. According to the Robert Koch Institute, approximately 5.6 million people newly contracted respiratory infections in early October, with 1.1 million seeking medical attention. While rhino- and enteroviruses are currently prevalent, activity from influenza and coronavirus is also increasing.

Separately, the Rhein-Sieg-Kreis health department has issued warnings regarding measles, emphasizing that these are not harmless childhood illnesses. Measles can lead to severe complications such as pneumonia, ear infections, and encephalitis. In rare cases, the disease can lead to subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE), a nearly always fatal condition that appears years after the initial infection.

Authorities reminded the public of the Measernschutzgesetz (Measles Protection Act) in effect since 2020, which requires proof of vaccination or immunity for individuals born after 1970 who work in or attend communal facilities, including schools, daycare centers, and refugee accommodations.
