Germany human trafficking victim numbers rise significantly
The number of identified human trafficking and exploitation victims in Germany has risen significantly over the last decade, according to data from the Federal Ministry of the Interior. In the past year, 958 victims were identified, compared to 469 in 2015 and 656 in 2016. Since 2021, the annual number of identified victims has remained at least 800.
Most identified victims are female, including many subjected to forced prostitution. Regarding victim support, approximately 23 percent of victims were referred to counseling centers in each of the last two years. This is a decrease from previous years, when the referral rate typically ranged between 27 and 35 percent.
Member of Parliament Cem Ince of Die Linke described the rising figures as an ‘alarm signal’ for victim protection. He emphasized the need for reliable access to support and permanent funding for specialized counseling centers. Meanwhile, the German cabinet has approved a draft law aimed at more effectively prosecuting traffickers, particularly those who use false promises to lure individuals into forced labor.
