Germany reports strong cherry harvests and orchard growth

Germany is seeing significant activity in its fruit sectors, marked by both successful harvests and large-scale planting initiatives. According to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the 2026 cherry harvest reached approximately 48,500 tons, a 7.8% increase over the ten-year average. Sweet cherries accounted for 80.2% of this total, with notable production surges in Niedersachsen, while sour cherry cultivation continues to see a decline in acreage.

In parallel, the Bavarian initiative ‘Streuobst für alle!’ has reported substantial progress in orchard development. The Office for Rural Development in Middle Franconia has processed 21,400 tree applications since the program's inception four years ago. Across Bavaria, more than 150,000 orchard trees have been planted as part of a broader goal to reach one million new trees by 2035 to secure vital habitats.
