Germany reports two deaths from Vibrio bacteria in water

The Robert Koch Institute has reported 17 cases of Vibrio bacteria infections in Germany this year, resulting in two deaths among elderly individuals.

Vibrio bacteria thrive in warm waters and are commonly found in saline environments like the North and Baltic Seas, though they can also appear in inland waters with slight salinity. Infections can occur through oral ingestion of contaminated water or undercooked seafood, leading to severe diarrhea. A more critical risk involves the bacteria entering the body through small wounds, which can cause life-threatening wound infections characterized by redness, swelling, blisters, fever, or chills.

Individuals with weakened immune systems, including children and the elderly, are at a higher risk of complications.
